How I Got Touched by God

Read by Dominique "Nikki" Abeyta, age 11,
to the congregation during the Children's Time
in morning worship, Dec. 21, 2003.

I once heard this question when I was downstairs in Sunday School, and I thought to myself, When did I get touched by God? At that time I said to myself, I never got touched by God. I mean, look at all the bad stuff that has happened to me and my family. Like one of my best friends just stuck up her nose at me when she got tired of me, or when my great grandma died or even when my dad got stuck on a drug and then made my family and me move from our house and away from our friends.

Knowing that, how could I ever say that God has touched me?

But then I looked around and said to myself, I wish I had someone or someplace to go to when I feel sad or even when I just want to talk to someone. Sometimes you just want someone to listen, you know? Well I looked around and found the answer to my own question. When did I get touched by God? I got touched by God when I became a member of this church.

Becoming a member of this church is like entering a whole different family. You guys are like a part of my family. You helped my family and me, just by being there for us when my mom was really hurt by my dad. So I wanted to present this letter to you because this congregation is what God touched me by. And for that I thank you because love is one of the best things in life and you gave that to my family and me.

Thank you.
